Zillow’s StreetEasy Paves the Way for New York-Born and Bred Brokerage Leader

Jason Tsalkas of SERHANT. has built a successful real estate career after changing careers and following a path similar to that of his father, who is now retired. Tsalkas leads a nine-person team at SERHANT. that handles co-ops, condos, new developments and residential properties ranging from modest homes to the highest price points. Tsalkas is a native New Yorker whose knowledge of the city's five boroughs, background in finance and upbringing around the real estate industry give him a unique perspective when helping clients achieve their goals. He has been in real estate for approximately 12 years. Like many Manhattan agents, he started in rentals before transitioning into sales and later working with co-ops, condos and houses. Tsalkas believes that competition in real estate is about achieving the best outcome for clients for the right reasons. He emphasizes that agents should not try to mislead anyone and should focus on delivering the best possible results. He applies the same level of service whether he is working with a studio apartment in an outer borough or a multimillion-dollar estate. He believes that every client is making a significant financial decision and deserves equal responsibility and attention, regardless of the property's price. Growing up in a middle-class family in Queens, Tsalkas was encouraged by his parents to work hard in school and sports. He says this upbringing helped him maintain a balanced perspective, even when handling higher-priced transactions. Tsalkas strongly supports giving buyers and sellers access to the full real estate market. Although he recognizes that private listings can be appropriate in certain situations, he believes buyers should have the opportunity to see all available properties and sellers should have the widest possible exposure to prospective buyers. He is currently working with a student whose parent wants to see all available options to find the best property within their budget. Tsalkas stresses the importance of data and market visibility when presenting a property to a seller or advising a buyer. He recommends starting every seller presentation or interview with a comprehensive comparative market analysis, including referrals. He explains that agents should look beyond the number of bedrooms and bathrooms and consider price per square foot, layouts, renovations, unique property features, outdoor space and other differences that can affect a property's value. Agents should understand why comparable properties with similar layouts may sell at significantly different prices. Tsalkas also credits Zillow Group's StreetEasy with playing a major role in developing his business and client relationships. He describes StreetEasy as an essential resource for people buying, selling or renting real estate across New York City's five boroughs. He explains that the platform allows clients to research recent transactions and access property information before meeting with an agent. However, he believes an agent's value lies in interpreting that information, explaining the details that clients may not recognize and helping them understand the factors behind a property's value. Tsalkas continues to represent clients directly while leading his nine-person team. He works closely with team members, discusses their daily activities and challenges, and offers strategies to improve their results. He particularly enjoys working directly with his agents and helping them develop their skills. He says that knowing the market and available inventory is essential, especially because clients increasingly use the internet and artificial intelligence to research properties independently. He believes agents must know enough to answer questions and provide advice beyond what clients can discover themselves. Outside his professional life, Tsalkas spends time with his wife and their three-year-old daughter, Atlas. Her name has three personal meanings for him. First, he is half Greek and appreciates its connection to Greek mythology. Second, he and his family enjoy traveling and associate the name with the world atlas. Third, the name honors his late mother, who was his best friend and worked in the Rockefeller Center building where the Atlas statue stands. He says he misses his mother every day and wishes she could have m
